Introduction

A space that is occupied 24 hours a day by a large variety of users should be a space that is layered with various transitional areas which enhance the user’s experience. It requires ease of use, accessibility and logical distribution and flow.

The existing site incorporates different frequencies of travel and acts as a transitional point for people heading to their next destination. Congestion and dispersion between these frequencies makes for a lack of flow throughout the site. Pedestrians currently using the site experience overcrowding resulting in delay (particularly during peak hours). Consequently, the site evokes a hurried, destination based experience.

The proposed scheme seeks to create an environment where people and their experiences are the main focus. It will incorporate multiple functions which overlap in usage, time and space. It is a place which is in constant use and is permeable and accessible to all users. The intensity of usage varies at different times of the day and in different zones of the design.

The final form which emerges integrates these diverse functions and generates logical connections and transitional spaces, making it a stimulating, effortlessly navigational space. The energy and movement of the site is enhanced and showcased by the spaces created. The notion of visibility conceptualises the scheme.
